Friday Notes
March 5, 2010
1. We need LSC candidates! Forms must be submitted by March 11th. Nominations form available in the office or you can go to http://www.cps.edu/Pages/LSCElections.aspx We have zero candidates at present. If we do not have enough parents to offer a full slate of candidates, the CPS Board of Education will appoint them. 2. The first grade class would like to thank the kindergarten and 2nd graders for coming to our healthy snack tasting.
3. JUDGES NEEDED!! The annual Edison History Fair will be held on Wednesday March 17th and we are looking for people who would be willing to be judges. This would require a couple of hours of your time in the morning and I think you'd enjoy seeing the quality of work that our 6th and 8th grade students accomplish. The topics are varied and always interesting. If you, or anybody you know, might have an interest, please contact Mr. Barber at 773 534-0540 or by email at djbarber@cps.edu We would really appreciate any help since our students deserve as much feedback about this enormous body of work. Thank you Mr. Barber 4. Attention 5th and 6th grade students and parents. The IMSA Kids Institute program is offering a FUNshop for 5th and 6th graders on March 20th from 9-noon. It is entitled Up, Up and Away! and explores the geometry of kites. Please see the attached flyer and sign up to go!!
5. Attached is a sign up form for boys’ volleyball try-outs. The try-outs will be Monday, March 8th and Wednesday, March 10th from 2:15-3:45 pm in the gym. The boys that make the team will practice on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:15-3:45 beginning March 15th.
6. Mrs. Smith is holding a brief training session from 10:45-11:15 a.m. on Monday (3/8) and Tuesday (3/9) for any parents who are interested in helping her in the library. Helping consists of scanning library books into the system, inputting some data, and printing labels for the books so they can be placed on the shelves. Once you are "trained" to do this very easy job, you can make your own hours and help in the library any time during school hours. Please come on Monday or Tuesday morning if you are interested! Your assistance will be much appreciated.
7. Please turn in your Legacy dinner RSVP by March 10th. After the 10th, prices go up from $60 a ticket to $70. THANKS. I attached the dinner ticket RSVP, parents or teachers could download it if they "lost" their invite.
8. HAVE YOU SEEN A 6FT WHITE RABBIT LURKING IN THE SCHOOL LOBBY?
It's Harvey, star of Edison's 8th Grade Class Play, which will be presented on March 23 & 24th. For just $1.00 you can buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win Harvey as your very own Pooka! Buy one ticket, buy ten -- the more you buy the better chance you have to take Harvey home with you. He's over 6ft, he's a great listener, and he'll double as a floor pillow when you want to get some reading done!
9. Raffle tickets will be on sale at lunch starting Monday, March 15th and the drawing will be held during the play performance. Starting March 15th in the lunchroom, you can buy tickets to the play and Smencils will also be on sale. This is a fundraiser for the 8th Grade Class Trip.
10. In an effort to help students and parents have another way to keep up with assignments and the due dates, we are piloting the use of a website called Edmodo. One of its features is a calendar on which we will be posting a listing of assignment due dates and additional information about assignments for grades 3-8.
Edmodo can be accessed on any browser at http://edmodo.com .
The username is different for each grade, but uses the format 8thERGC, 7thERGC, 6thERGC, 5thERGC, 4thERGC and 3rdERGC. The password for all accounts is the same <edison>. Parents and students may all use the same log-on to access the page for their grade.
In the colored bar at the top is a link to the calendar which will show the general information for the whole school and the specifics for the group you have logged-on. Details of the assignment, if they have been posted, can be accessed by clicking on the student’s grade in the list to the left of the screen.
Edmodo includes the option to send notes to the teacher or to make comments, but this site is for the calendar ONLY and none of our teachers will be monitoring it for messages from students or parents. Regular communication links should still be used if you need additional information about an assignment.
11. Thank you to our parents who attended our "Parent Share" Thursday night. We had a great speaker that provided some incredible information. If you were unable to attend, we have available a copy of the presentation. Email De Anne Glomski at deedaveg@ameritech.net or have your child pick up a copy or stop in the office for a copy (located on the counter). If you would like a copy of the book, Late, Lost and Unprepared, for a discounted price of $18, send a check made payable to the PTO no later than Friday, March 12, marked Book from Parent Share and a copy will be sent home with your child.
12. Thank you to all the 5th graders and their parents for making the Sock Hop such a huge success. It was a great evening. We had everything from poodle skirts and rolled up jeans to our very own 6th and 7th grade rockers! It was a night full of energy and…volume. Thank you to all who came to enjoy.
